Objective:  The game consists of wining tricks*.  In each round the team of four splits in to pairs, where one team plays at home and the other plays away at another country.  If you win the majority of tricks against another country you come home with a flag.  The winning team is the one with the most number of flags.

*A trick is a round of play, with each player contributing one card

The concept

  • Four players form a country and their job is to defend flags at home and win flags away

  • Play is arranged in rounds where two plays visit an assigned country and work together to win a flag. Meanwhile, the home team seeks to defend their flags.

  • Players number themselves 1,2,3,4 and follow our schedule of home and away games

  • The winning team must win 7 or more tricks to retain their home flag or go home with a flag.

How to Play:  Beginners Guide to Whist

  • The pack is shuffled and dealt by the captain (after being cut by the player to the left of the dealer).

  • The player to the left of the dealer leads with any card.  The following players must play with the same suit.  The highest card wins the trick unless…

  • If a player does not have the same suit they may play with any card of their choice but cannot win the trick with a different suit unless that card comes from a ‘trump suit’.

  • The ‘trump suit’ is the suit defined by the cutting of the pack before the game begins.  That suits is the trump suit for the whole round.
